CHL Rules


 

Rules & Regulations

Absolutely NO REFUNDS.Whether you are injured, suspended or expelled, your money will not be refunded. The only exception would be is if you are not drafted.
 

  1. 5 Minute Warm up.
  2. Minimum Players:Each team must have a minimum of 5 players (including goalie) on the ice when the puck is dropped. If a team does not have enough players at game time, that team will forfeit and the opposing team will receive 2 points.
  3. 3-16 Minute Periods (Running Clock)
  4. If there is a 2 goal differential (ex: 4-2) or less in the last 2 minutes of play the clock will become stop time for the remainder of the game. (remember the curfew clock will always run and can end a game)
  5. Each team is entitled to a 1 Minute Time Out.
  6. 1 Minute break between each period
  7. Over Time/Shootout: In the event of a tie during regulation, each team will be allowed 3 skaters that will shoot alternately. The Visitors will shoot first followed by the Home team. Each team will be awarded 1 pt. for the regulation tie or if it stays tied after the shootout. In the event a team wins the shootout, that team will be awarded 2 pts.
  8. Face masks, Shields or Half Shields are mandatory:There will be no exceptions. If you do not have at least a half shield, you will not be permitted to skate additionally, if you are under the age of 18, you MUST wear a full cage or full shield.
  9. Equal Ice Time:All players must play equal time during the regular season. Although the following are exceptions to this rule: 1-Power Play, 2-Penalty Kill or 3-5 minutes remaining in the game.
  10. USA Hockey Ruleswill govern play except where indicated. Please familiarize yourself with the USA Hockey Rules. There are rule changes every year that you might not be familiar with.
  11. Off Sides:There will be “tag-up” offside’s
  12. Player Substitutions:There will be no player substitutions for the short handed team allowed at a stoppage of play. A team shall receive one warning and then a penalty shall be called for delay of game if the short handed team commits the same infraction in the game, even if it’s later in the game or a different penalty. (player changes must be on the fly for the short handed team)
  13. Slapshots are allowed.
  14. This is a NON-CHECKING league, ZERO TOLERANCE. You are to play the puck NOT the body.
  15. Penalties: A player will be assessed a 2 minute minor for an unintentional check and a 5-minute major for an intentional check. Rubbing out the player into the boards is not allowed and the ref has the option to call a minor or major penalty.
  16. Major Penalty:If a players receives a “major penalty” that player has to leave the ice immediately and is also suspended the following game and/or possibly additional games pending a review by the Commissioner(s).
  17. If a player receives 3 minor penalties in the same game, that player must sit out for the remainder of that game. If that same player again receives 3 minor penalties in another game the same season, that player will have to leave the game and serve an additional game suspension.
  18. If a player is suspended by the league more than 3 times in a single season for any reason, that player will be suspended for the remainder of the season and the following season.
  19. No taunting or trash talking.
  20. Fighting will not be tolerated. If anyone throws a punch or intentionally slashes a player and causes injury that player will be banned from the CHL for the remainder of the season and/or permanently be banned from playing in the CHL. This rule will be strictly enforced so keep your cool. We are playing to enjoy ourselves, not win the Stanley Cup.
  21. Bodily Harm:Any player that swings his stick at another player or attempts to cause bodily harm to another player or official will be expelled from the league. Whether that player makes contact or not.
  22. NO THIRD MAN IN:Every player’s role is to defuse any situation. Any player that escalates any situation whether verbally or physically will be assessed a minimum of 3 games suspension.
  23. Confrontations:Any player that has a dispute, argument or confrontation that occurred on the ice and then continues it off the ice will be dealt with swiftly. The Board will not tolerate any such behavior. Leave it on the ice.
  24. Spectators:Please inform your friends, relatives and fans to respect other players and the officials. The CHL does not want hecklers in the stands causing animosity between players and other fans. Everyone is the CHL pretty much know each other and we don’t want any family feuds.
  25. Game Ejections:If you are ejected from a game for any reason, you must go to the locker room immediately. If you do not go to your locker room, the Board has the option to suspend you additional games.
  26. Arguing with Officials:Anyone that aggressively and/or continuously argues a call will be assessed an automatic 10 minute misconduct. There will be ZERO TOLERANCE on this issue. Additionally, any player that swears or threatens a referee will automatically be suspended a minimum of 5 games. Repeat offenders will be subject to suspension and/or expulsions from the CHL. Don’t argue!
  27. 10- Minute misconduct:A player that receives a 10 minute misconduct shall be suspended the next game. Remember, we will be on a running clock. RESPECT THE OFFICIALS!
  28. Overly Aggressive Play:If any player is considered to playing “Overly Aggressive” by a captain and/or Board member during and/or after a game will be subject to harsh repercussions by the Board.
  29. Absolutely no shooting the puck after the whistle.You will be given a 10 minute misconduct which will automatically result in a minimum of a game suspension.

 

  1. Any player expelled from the CHL for any reason must wait at least two full calendar years to apply for reinstatement.

 

  1. New/Intermediate Players:To improve the quality of the CHL, there will be no new novice or beginner skaters drafted. The Board at sole discretion will determine if a player is advanced enough to be placed in the draft and/or play in the CHL. Any and all players are eligible to try out. All players that played in the league in 06-07 and 07-08 are grandfathered in.

 

  1. Any player that quits his team before the season is over will no longer be invited to play in the CHL. The exception would be if a player is injured, moves or has a valid reason that is accepted by the board.

 

  1. Trades/Trade Deadline: Players that are traded between teams must have the same or similar rating(s). Trade Deadline is December 31st.

 

  1. DO NOT leave your locker room a mess. Please pick all the trash, tape, paper, etc… and throw it into the garbage can before leaving.

 If the CHL Board determines that a player’s conduct is “detrimental to the league” or if certain infractions are not listed, the Board at its sole discretion will make a final determination as to any ruling(s) or determination(s).

Absolutely NO ALCOHOL is allowed in the building unless it is going directly into the locker room and stays in the locker room.

We have had issues with spectators drinking alcohol in the stands.

Remember that St. Mary’s is a school and it is illegal to have alcohol in the rink. The rink manager has informed the CHL that he will not allow us to play at his rink if the CHL does not enforce this law. Inform your guests/fans not to bring alcohol in the rink.

 

The CHL will be creating bylaws during the seasons concerning all rules and regulations in the league.
 

Regular season tie breaker:
1) Head to Head
2) Goal differential (goals for / goals against)
3) Least goals against
4) Most goals for
5) Least Penalty Minutes
6) Draw Straws / Coin flip

**The points that are counted in tie breaker are only from the games between the teams that are tied. The games against teams not in the tie do not count when deciding the tie breaker.
